Dental Hygiene Tips

I'm not much of one for dental care.  I despise it.

This mostly comes from my father repeatedly telling me the story of how, at 25 years old, his dentist told him he had horrible teeth and would lose them all by the time he was 30.  But he was super-committed and vigilant and would not have that gummy destiny forced upon him by some jerk with a supposed "medical degree".  So he brushed 7 times a day, flossed by the hour, bought every new waterpik technology as soon as it emerged on the market, and used mouthwash like other people use gin.  I swear he kept a flask in his back pocket and the aroma of minty freshness clung to him like cheap cologne on a Jersey Shore dude.

So, being a contrary soul, even to the point of stupidity, I refuse to do more than brush my teeth two or three times a day.  I never go to the dentist if I can help it.

But there was a brief period about 5 years ago where I decided to reform my ways and get my teeth checked out.  Being low on cash, especially with impending nuptials approaching, I began attending the University of Pennsylvania Dental Clinic.  It is run for the education of the dental students and the care is... reflective of that.

Anyways, I could go through the litany of dental students who reviewed my teeth with pimply faced excitement, recommending more complex procedures to carve, cut and clean each time, but that would take years of explanation.

My final procedure there took place when I received the recommendation of a graduating senior to have a gum retraction.  I won't gross you out with the grizzly details, but it involved showing up for a surgery where they would cut the roof of my mouth open while I was awake and graft some pig bone to my jawline.  No joke.

I replied that there was no way I could afford it, even at the clinic's reduced rates, as I was getting married in a few months and was saving for the honeymoon.  Neema, my "dentist" thought for a moment and then replied, "Ok, well, I'll give it to you as a wedding present.  You just have to let me photograph the procedure for my thesis project."  We had tried putting something similar on our wedding registry at Bed Bath and Your Mom but were stymied by the comparative shipping costs, so I took him up on his offer.

Sufficed to say, it was an experience.  In a particularly shady abandoned cubicle farm in a basement of an unfindable academic building, Neema and his two assistants prepped me for surgery.  So, to do the math, that's six hands working on my mouth.  But was it enough?  No, Neema stops at one point and says, "Dave, I can't really get a good photo with one hand.  Would you mind holding your own gum retractors?"  I obliged, only to begin cracking up at the ridonkulousness of my situation, chortling with laughter, high as a kite on pain killers.

This may be part of the reason why my stitches started coming out later that night.  Still doped up beyond sanity, the tickling in the back of my throat drove me to madness.  I proceeded to find some scissors and a butter knife to cut the offending strands out myself.  Fortunately, my long suffering fiancee (now the Mrs) and her two roommates thought this unwise.  None of them particularly medically inclined nor happy about icky stuff, they jumped me.  While my wife pinned me down by sitting on my chest, her sister held the flashlight, and her roommate reached in and cut my stitches for me.  I could only assume that she has had some similar experiences growing up in Uganda and handled herself with aplomb.

All this is to say, if you can avoid such an experience through proper dental maintenance and if you're less rigidly contrary than I, it is well worth your effort.  That's why this cool set of a year's worth of toothbrushes from Anthropologie, while silly, still grabbed my eye and deserved a blog post:

They're marked with the three month time limit for which you're supposed to use them prior to discarding.  If like me, you're inclined to keep a toothbrush until it is no longer useful for anything but grout cleaning, this could be beneficial.

Sheet Straps for the Sleep Talkin' Man

I've recently discovered the blog, Sleep Talkin' Man which is among my new favorites.  In the morning, the Mrs and I have a brief moment to sit down while she finishes her breakfast and I sip my coffee and we log in to discover what Adam, the Sleep Talkin' Man said last night in his sleep.

 This morning's gem?

"Put those finger-toes away. Put them away! Freak of f***ing nature. Ugh. Finger-toes, don't you pick things up with them! Ew. That's just not right. You start using them like hands, I'll chop your f***ing arms off. Then you'll be stuck with them. That'll teach ya ."

You can listen to the audio of that particular beauty here.

It also frequently reminds my wife of the things I said in my sleep the previous night.  Now, we haven't taken to recording them, but according to her, I'm often as colorful although probably not with the sheer volume and lucidity with which Adam seems to speak.  Last night apparantly I declared:

"Nobody puts Baby in a Corner"

Let me start by making it perfectly clear that I am no fan of "Dirty Dancing".  I had to watch it once for... I can't believe I'm saying this... a ballroom dancing class that I took in college.  Embarrassing:  Both the movie and the admission of what I took to fill a athletics requirement at PSU more than 10 years ago.  The one upside is that I know how to Meringue, Foxtrot, Waltz, Swing, Rumba, and Tango which has served me well at really odd times in my life.

(Like when my entire family went on an abominable cruise last year and in a drunken craze decided to take over the Latin club on the Lido deck at 1 AM.  Of the whitest dancers ever to grace the "Criterion Lounge" dancefloor, at least I knew enough steps to look marginally matched with my wife who is steeped in Latin culture.)

So why I would quote "Dirty Dancing" on this particular evening is a mystery.

But every since I started on a new round of prescription mood altering drugs, I've been talking even more animatedly in my sleep.  Tossing and turning, shouting, sitting up in bed, thrashing through the covers at the foot of the bed for unseen assailants, unwanted swinger parties, dogs, and bees.  (Seriously, I'm not exaggerating about any of those.)  My wife is blessed by God with deafness in one ear, so she can just sleep with her good ear down in the pillow to ignore me.  If that's not an indicator that we were meant to be together, I don't know what is.

But lots of people struggle with this.  At a recent dinner party, we broached the subject and discovered of the 5 couples there, 4 had an identical situation.  A loud animated sleep talker married to a long suffering spouse.

One of the MANY disadvantages of a sleep talker, is that in their animated thrashing and spinning and tossing and turning, they often pull the fitted sheet off the bed.  Which is a self perpetuating cycle, because then, caught up in the elastic binding and trapped between the mattress and fitted sheet, their dreams turn to being tortured as a CIA member, being buried alive, being forced to wear an ascot,  whatever.  And the trashing gets even more spastic.

Plus, it makes it harder to have a pretty bed every morning.

So, for those of you who fall in the 4 out of 10 Americans with vivid dreams and corresponding night calisthenics, go invest in some of these:

They work.  And your bedmate will thank you.  Adam, the Sleep Talkin' Man, if you happen to stumble across my blog, I would suggest you DON'T buy these.  We at The House Rules don't want anything to interfere with the natural progress of your dreams and the bòn móts they produce.

Uffa!- Long Johns

Dang.  Never should have tempted fate by writing that last post.  Pretty much as I was writing about it being so frikkin warm, the air began its combative descent into the 20's.

Ugh.  Back to wearing Long Johns.

I'm Back, Baby! (A How-To Guide)

So for those of you who put me on their blog reader and have wondered where I’ve been for two years, I’m back! For those of you seeing my blog for the first time, just don’t look at the post dates and it will be like I never left.

How does one begin to sum up a two year absence? First step, crack open a beer. I’m drinking a Hennepin from Ommegang right now. It’s fantastic. Yes, its only 10 AM. What of it? It’s President’s Day and I’m celebrating freedom and democracy by having a beer whenever I damn well please. Perhaps the bigger question you should be asking yourself is why you AREN’T drinking a beer right now. Clearly, as the tea baggers would say, you are perpetrating your socialist communist agenda that wishes to deprive us noble God-fearing free-market rugged individualists of our civil liberties. For shame…

Second step, pretend like my absence never happened. I talked to a bunch of folks over the last two who repeatedly asked where my blog had gone. They regaled me with stories of the massive void that had been left in their lives by my silence. They mourned. They grieved. There was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. All of which is crazy, because my absence never happened. Moving on…

Third step, Update via Bullet Points. There’s no way to condense all the pertinent information into a blog post if I go with a narrative structure. The time wasted on telling you about the particulars of drug-induced text messaging calamities would take 17 paragraphs minimum. So, I’m opting for the list format:

*Still Happily Married, Living in Mt Airy-Philadelphia, No Kids, One Dog

*Still working at the same Architectural firm, but going to a part-time structure to allow me time for other interests. (Like Writing!)

*Still heavily interested in everything related to the “House” including home renovation, gardening, cooking, design, and entertaining. And of course the ancillary topics of city living, politics, faith and religion, and pest control. (The Stink Bug Eradication Techniques post is definitely my most popular to date.)

*Still super anxious type-A opinionated control freak, but the drugs are helping.

All of this is to say, I look forward to blogging more in the future. Coming up, a post on our newest cocktail invention, the Raj Collins.

Fourth Step, pull out the liquor and get started.

I’ll be talking to ya.

Pride cometh before a Fall

Far be it from me to point out a speck in your eye without identifying the log in my own.

This website lists the 100 Most Often Mispronounced Words and Phrases in the English Language.

I immediately scrolled to "For All Intensive Purposes" which is my most despised distortion of the actual Phrase "For all Intents and Purposes". Smug and arrogant, I found that it was indeed listed and I was smarter than a lot of people.

But then I also noticed the following phrases which I've been screwing up for years...

Don't say: Chomp at the Bit
Do Say: Champ at the Bit
Reason: "Chomp" has probably replaced "champ" in the U.S. but we thought you might like to be reminded that the vowel should be [æ] not [o].

Don't say: Spitting Image
Do Say: Spit and Image
Reason: The very spit of someone is an exact likeness. "The spit and image" or "spit image" emphasizes the exactness.

Oh, Egg why doth you run down my face so gloppily?

They also have a list of 100 Most Misspelled Words which is a good reminder. I just screwed up license several times last night and I mess up address, friend, accommodate, judgment, and privilege so often that I have no misconceptions about spelling well.

The Word Rules

Let's stop talking about linguistically interesting dog names for a minute and discuss words.

(Because that's FAR more interesting to folks looking to this blog for home repair tips...)

I crave words. I discuss words incessantly. My pastor told Rachael and I that we were the most semantic couple he knew. I like reading the thesaurus. I ask for books on etymology for Christmas.

(Of course my Dad always answers those requests by giving me books on Old Testament Aramaic Etymology even though I'm not, nor ever have been, a seminary student or shown any aptitude for living foreign languages, much less dead foreign languages.)

Anyways, if you knew me at all, it should not be at all surprising that I would have categorized my favorite words. I have three characteristics which define my favorites:

1. Multi-syllabic
2. Beginning with "PL"
3. Ending with the suffix "-age", meaning act of, state of, or collection of, generally added to a French root word.

So I was very excited to find this link to Word Count which chronicles the 86,800 most commonly used words in the English language in a graphically beautiful format...
My favorite word, and thus far the only one I've found which fits all three of my categories comes in at rank #15,192: "Plumage"

When I pointed out the list to Rach, she immediately entered a few names and was surprised by the fact that "David" was ranked#619. I was not surprised because I'm awesome.

The World Wide Intrawebernetter

A virus destroyed my work computer on Tuesday night. It was like something out of an early 90’s techno suspense thriller, “The Net” or “Fear.com” or "Untraceable". Yes, I know, "Untraceable" was put out last year, but it feels like an early 90's techno thriller, especially when Diane Lane, the FBI agent says, "He got inside my wireless network!" or "He hacked into my car!"

Anyways, I was surfing the web looking for home improvement blogs. I usually surf without fear because my office has anti-virus programs and spyware controls and firewalls and pop-up blockers and a whole host of other things I don’t understand completely in the slightest but in which I still put my faith.

I don’t know which site it came from, but suddenly an advertisement for buying authentic reproduction samurai swords pops up. Unphased, I clicked the “Close Window” button. Instantly, my screen goes white, and an alert on my desktop appears saying “Your computer is infected with the following spyware programs: Yousmelllikepoop.exe* and Dontforgettobrushyourteeth.exe*. Please install Antispyware XP 2008** immediately.

Now I’m phased. This was clearly bad news, but I didn’t believe the message on my screen. I smelled a scam. I tried to cancel through the Task Manager. I watched as the Task Manager fell apart before my eyes.I tried to Google research the scam. I watched as all the google hits were rerouted to erroneous websites. I pulled out the network cable to contain the infection. I tried to use Add/Remove Programs and watched as the virus tore me a new one.

Finally I called the tech support office employed by our office. The informed me that this virus is some new thing and it is NASTY. Apparantly Antispyware XP 2008 and all its associated programs have no cure and no virus protection program yet exists to block them. We could spend hours trying to rebuild things and would probably destroy windows in the process, or we could just wipe the computer clean and go back to factory settings.

Which I did. I spent Wednesday morning rebuilding. Fortunately all my actual files were on the server and unaffected. I just had to reload all my software and settings and plugins and lisp files and other things ad nauseum.

But it was really kind of freaky to be “attacked” that way and for it to look so much like a cheesy techno thriller where the geeky hero cries out “The hacker is calling from INSIDE the Server! They've breached the firewall. Get out of the server, get out of the server!!!!” I’m sure someone who knows anything about computer science is reading this and snorting their Red Bull with laughter. That’s kind of the point. I don’t know anything about this stuff and for all I know some villain could be overtaking my DVD player, my toaster, and my Electric Nose Hair Trimmer as we speak. Laugh if you will, but I’m unplugging them all before I go to bed.

*I don't remember the real virus names, but wouldn't those be disarmingly frightening names, like when an innocent looking kid comes up to you and says something childlike and simultaneously creepy? Like that one time Rach and I stayed at this bed and breakfast and the innkeepers little girl comes and talks to us at breakfast. Rach asks her, "Do you like having people stay at your house?" And she replies, "I can hear them up there". And Rach says, "You mean you can hear them walking around upstairs?" And the little girl says "No, I mean, I talk to the shadow people on the ceiling." with this wide eyed vacant stare and a smile. (shiver)

**But the Antispyware XP 2008 thing was a real name. Look out for that. I've talked to two other folks since then who got the same bug.

Why We've been Gone

Before you go getting your panties/boxers/briefs/thongs/commando-ness in a bunch, let me explain...

Literally thousands of letters and comments have poured in to "The House Rules" wondering what has happened to us since March. I've deleted all of them from the blog simply because I'm not the type to publish my fame and critical adoration for the world to see. But here's a sampling of some of the more poignant letters we've received:

"Where the frack did you go? Your blog is like crack. You get us addicted with your incredibly intelligent writing and witty subject choices and then leave us to go through a shaky sweating withdrawal? What's that abouoot?" -Carolyn S., reader from Philadelphia (previously Canada)

"I love your blog. I read it to all the neighbors between tear gassings. And generally it brings everyone together despite the longstanding racial and political divisiveness of the region."- Trey H., reader from Jerusalem (previously the Hooka Bar).

"I'm bored without your blog. Give me something in this semi-charmed life since I don't really have much to do in the studio right now."-Stephen J. from Los Angeles (previously Billboard's Top 40)

"I'm a creepy minion of Satan. But my dad and I still really like to read your blog between routines. Keep it up!"- Nastia L. from Beijing (previously the 5th circle of hell)

"I WILL EAT YOUR BABIES, B#$%H, IF YOU DON'T SPREAD MY MESSAGE OF DOOM AND DESTRUCTION"- Orblokz, Destroyer of Worlds (previously of the planet Yormomiter).

Anyways, here's what happened basically... in March we went to Florida for a nice relaxing spring break. We were staying at Rach's aunt and uncles place in Miami, hangin' in the chickee hut (Yep, its a real thing, more on that later.) having a Dark and Stormy Night at 11:00 in the morning. The weather was amazing, we were relaxed, it was perfection.

And I brought my computer to try and get some blogging done. I was planning on introducing a new feature, "Conversations with Your House" (more on that later too) which is destined to get me in a buttload of trouble with the neighbors but will inevitably be rolicking good fun for you gentle reader.

Anyways, I powered on my computer and was just taking my last sip of the DSN before typing when THIS crazy ass orchid/bean/tentaclebeast of hell thing comes tendriling around the edge of the hut. I didn't think plants (?) could move that quickly, but in one deft move it had entwined my computer, ripped it from my grasp, and retreated into the suburban jungle from whence it came. Fortunately Rach snapped a picture before it grabbed the computer.

Scary for sure. Someone should probably have done a study or expedition or at least started a "Save the Crazy Ass Orchid/Bean/Tentaclebeast from Hell" campaign, but in a sunburned DSN stupor, I shook my head in disbelief, and just decided to go on with our vacation.

So I've been with out a computer for the last 6 months. That's the reason you haven't seen a blog posting. I couldn't blog from work obviously because that would be unethical and cut into my nap time.

Well, this morning, Aunt Janet came to Philly from Miami, and lo and behold, she brought my computer. It had been found 3 miles from their house next to a waste water management reservoir in the Target shopping complex. Everyone's best guess is that the Crazy Ass Orchid/Bean/Tentaclebeast from Hell had more of a taste for Big Macs and thought better of the effect of my PC on its digestive tract.

Sufficed to say, we fortunately have a lot of stories to tell, and we'll be bringing them to you now commercial free.

*Some names and exact circumstances of events have been changed to protect the innocent and the hopelessly lazy.

24 Postings This Week!

Its been almost two months since we've posted, which breaks all the cardinal rules of blogging. You know the recommended blogging rate by the "experts" is like three times a week? Yeesh. So I guess we owe you about 24 postings this week. We'll get right on that...

Let's be frank. The Holidays are busy for everybody. On top of that, there were final papers, travel for work, and project proposals to write. So you'll just have to spread a little Christmas goodwill and forgive us. Besides, we didn't do that many home projects during the last two months anyways. I mean, who can do any good work with power tools while simultaneoulsy being "lit up like a Christmas tree" on my brother's kickass Bloody Marys?

But we did chronicle a few of those illustrious items and we'll be getting them to you in the very near future.

In the meantime, we leave you with this belated Christmas present. A verbal interpretation of a striking image from our imagination:

So, you're lying there on Christmas morning all snuggled up in blankets and pillows when what to your wandering eyes should appear? Your loved one arrives with tray of Christmas breakfast in bed! Now, being a despiser of all things breakfast foodish, in my head, Christmas breakfast involves a Chocolate Eclair. You smile at your baby, grab the Eclair and open your mouth to take a giant bite. Just before you make contact, a baby kitten pops its head forth from the end of the eclair, tilts its Bavarian Cream covered head slightly to the side, glances at you out of the corner of its eye, and quietly emits a quizzical "Mrow?"

That's What Christmas Means to Me...

Repost: Two Party System

In light of another Election Day, fast approaching, I thought I'd unearth a political rant from the past. This is from ye ol' myspace page...

(It took my wife a little while to understand, but now she knows that if you pretend like you're interested, I'll be able to wrap it up quickly... )

Two Party System

We have these two concepts:

A. My identity is in Christ and in his work for me. I AM not my responsibilities. I AM not the things I do for other people. I AM not my sin or my Spirit lead works. I must be grounded and aware of my identity as a brother and recipient of the inheritance freely promised to me: Righteousness, Life, and Relations.

B. My responsibility is to Christ and the work he is doing in me. I DO have responsibilities. I DO have an imperitive to do things for other people. I DO have sin and DO have Spirit lead works. I must be grounded and aware of my responsibilities as a servant and soldier in the structure freely given to me: Righteousness, Life, and Relations.

In our constant drive to outline, simplify, and turn the work of an Eternal, Infinite, All-powerful, and Mysterious God into a way of life, lesson plan, or conversation, we sway into one category or the other. We rebel against trying to understand both equally because it makes things HARDER.

We have nations that only see one or the other.
We have churches that only see one or the other.
We have individuals (like myself) who are shortsighted and only see one or the other.

Does this remind anyone else of a two party system? Coincidental? I think not. Our sinful nature drives us to take a complex and beautiful world and divide it into packages of conservative/liberal OR mystical/legalistic. Its easier to be right when you can say someone else is wrong. I'm getting sick of trying to be right.

This is not a critique of any person or group of people (except maybe myself), but a realization of the way I think things really are. Sorry if its offensive to anybody.

Can I get an amen? (Or at least a blog commentary?)

In the Beginning

I'm a plot driven guy. I'm not a big fan of meandering narratives or mystery created by artificial flashback/flashforward devices. I like my books, movies, TV, etc to take me from point A to B in a relatively straight line.

So, we should probably begin by talking about how we got to this point. I've wanted to own a home since high school, mostly to assert my own creativity and not be bound by anyone else's opinions on how or where the what should happen. I love place and space and rooms and buildings and I wanted one of my own to care for. Its kind of like wanting a puppy that costs a $1000+ a month to own. Except with a house, there's a LOT more cleaning up of crap and it doesn't give off free heat.

So we started househunting this summer. What I didn't realize is that in marriage, everyone is bound by another's opinions. In the end, it turned out to be a great thing, but the process was grueling. We did a lot of looking, a little fighting, and a bit of moping. Its tough to find the "right" house in the market that you both like. No matter how much you abstractly discuss your pros/cons, the houses that you finally go look at create visceral reactions that can be at odds with everything you agreed to. We looked at a billion houses, we changed neighborhoods, we considered scrapping the whole thing and staying at my mother in laws house for the next 25 YRS.

Everybody told us that would happen, but you just don't understand until you go through it yourself. Everybody also told us that when you find it, you just KNOW. Now, I hate metaphysical mystical crap like that, but damned if we didn't walk into this place and just go, YUP. It was the perfect marriage of both of our pro/con lists. It was just right. It was a better house than I would have picked myself. It was a better house than my wife would have picked herself. We looked at three houses on this block. We were on the fence for all the others, but this was a nobrainer.

Ah, teamwork. I hate the concept, but in practice it usually yields great results. (Well, that's when I'm working as a team with my wife. There's lots of other teams that are just dumb. Like political parties, baseball teams, or architectural collaborations.)

So we settled at the end of Sept. We moved in last weekend. I'll relay that story another time. For now, behold the existing house pictures...

Coming over from Myspace

Just getting started here, but I don't want to forget where I've been. Here's a link to my previous blog, on Myspace. Nothing much of note, but some of it will be reposted when it seems applicable.

My Space Profile
